What’s the Difference Between Semi-Private and Group Personal Training?

When looking for a gym, many people get stuck choosing between personal training and group classes. But at 4D Gym in South Melbourne, we offer the best of both worlds—through two unique formats: semi-private personal training and group personal training.

So what’s the difference, and which one is right for you?

Semi-Private Personal Training (SPPT): Personalised Coaching in a Small Group

Our semi-private sessions are capped at four people per coach. That means you’re getting the benefits of 1-on-1 attention—form checks, tailored weights, personalised cues—without the cost of a fully private session.

Your training program is completely individualised, and your coach works with you to ensure every movement suits your goals, injury history, and fitness level. It’s ideal for:

  • Beginners who want close guidance

  • People returning from injury

  • Those chasing specific strength or physique goals

  • Anyone who values structure, routine, and measurable progress

With SPPT, your session is your own—just with a few like-minded people beside you.

Group Personal Training: A Shared Program with Strong Support

In our group PT sessions, we still cap numbers to maintain quality, but the session follows a unified program. You’ll still receive coaching, but it’s less tailored than SPPT. Group training is great for:

  • People who enjoy training with friends or family

  • Anyone looking for general fitness, not specific goals

  • Those who want a more social, team-based environment

  • People who enjoy high energy and communal motivation

Group PT is perfect for maintaining consistency, learning good technique, and building confidence with the barbell—all without feeling lost in a big class.

Which One Should You Choose?

The answer depends on your goals. If you want to:

  • Improve strength and technique faster

  • Rehab safely or train around injuries

  • Follow a structured plan with progressive overload

  • Get consistent 1-on-1 feedback within a supportive setting

… then semi-private personal training is the clear choice.

If you’re newer to training, value variety, and want community without needing high-level customisation, our group PT is a fantastic place to start.
